PaperQED in Claude and ChatGPT
Connect your PaperQED account to Claude or ChatGPT. The assistant can then search papers, check a claim against a paper with verbatim quotes, check a reference list and read your library, projects and documents. It works with your own account, your own data and your own quota.
Server URL
PaperQED is a remote MCP server. Use this URL wherever the assistant asks for a connector or MCP server URL. You sign in with your PaperQED account; no API key is needed.
https://api.paperqed.com/mcp Connect in Claude

- Choose Connect. A PaperQED window opens: sign in (email, Google or your campus single sign-on).
- Check the permissions and choose Allow access. You return to Claude.
- In a chat, turn PaperQED on in the tools menu and ask, for example: "Check this bibliography with PaperQED."
Claude Code
Add the server, then run /mcp in Claude Code and choose PaperQED to sign in:
claude mcp add --transport http paperqed https://api.paperqed.com/mcpConnect in ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps.
- Search for PaperQED and open it. Workspace admins may need to allow the app first.
- Choose Connect, sign in to PaperQED and choose Allow access.
- In a chat, pick PaperQED from the tools menu (or mention it) and ask your question.
Until PaperQED is listed in the ChatGPT app directory, you can add it in developer mode: Settings → Apps → Advanced settings → Developer mode, then Create app with the server URL and OAuth.
What the assistant can do
Every tool runs as you, with the same rules as the PaperQED App. No tool deletes anything.
| Tool | What it does | Effect |
|---|---|---|
search_papers | Finds papers for a sentence or topic, in any language, with quality card and retraction status. | Reads |
lookup_paper_by_doi | Gets one paper by DOI. | Reads |
get_paper | Gets a paper PaperQED already knows, by its id. | Reads |
verify_claim | Checks whether a paper supports a sentence, with verbatim quotes. The result is saved in your verification history. | Saves |
check_references | Checks a reference list: does each reference exist, do the details match, is it retracted. The check is saved in your account. | Saves |
get_reference_check | Shows one reference check, entry by entry. | Reads |
list_reference_checks | Lists your earlier reference checks. | Reads |
list_library_items | Lists the papers in your library; filter by text, project or tag. | Reads |
add_to_library | Adds papers to your library from a DOI, URL, BibTeX, RIS or CSL-JSON. | Saves |
format_citations | Formats library items as a bibliography or in-text citations (APA, IEEE, Chicago and more). | Reads |
list_projects | Lists your projects and their documents. | Reads |
get_document | Reads a document: chapters, paragraphs and the claim label of each claim sentence. | Reads |
get_account | Shows the connected account and the remaining monthly quota. | Reads |
Permissions
The consent screen lists what the assistant may do: search papers, read your library, add to your library, read your projects and documents, read and run reference checks, and verify claims. It cannot delete anything, see your password, change your plan or reach your billing. Access lasts until you disconnect; sign-in tokens expire after an hour and renew automatically.
Things to ask
- Find five recent peer-reviewed papers on digital literacy of first-year students, open access only.
- Check this reference list with PaperQED and tell me which entries do not match.
- Does the paper with DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0185809 support this sentence? Quote the passage.
- Read chapter 2 of my thesis in PaperQED and list the claims that still need a citation.
- Format the papers tagged "chapter-2" in my library as an APA 7 bibliography.
Quota
Searches, reference checks and claim verifications use the same monthly quota as the App. Reading your library, projects and documents does not. Ask the assistant to run get_account to see what is left.
Disconnect
In PaperQED, open Settings → Developer → Connected apps and choose Disconnect: the assistant's access stops immediately. Removing the connector in Claude or ChatGPT also stops it from calling PaperQED.
Your data
PaperQED sends the assistant only the results of the tools it calls in your chat. What the assistant does with that text follows the privacy terms of Claude or ChatGPT. PaperQED never uses your documents to train models. Details are in the privacy policy. Privacy policy
Troubleshooting
- "Not given permission": the connection was made with fewer permissions. Disconnect, connect again and allow access.
- "Quota used up": the monthly quota for that feature is used; it renews at the start of your billing period.
- The sign-in window keeps returning: allow pop-ups and third-party sign-in for paperqed.com, then try again. Campus accounts sign in with the campus button on the PaperQED sign-in page.
Still stuck? Email [email protected] with the time and what you asked the assistant.
